Can I use Premium gasoline for a added performance without hurting the engine? Carbs? Any advice or experiences would be much appreciated. The best approach is to maintain the unit using all the procedures in the owner's manual and keep it in tip top condition. A workshop manual will further help with more than the basic maintenance, and will answer questions you haven't even thought of yet! Fit a prop that allows the engine to get full recommended revs with your normal load and use, and use quality lubricants and fresh fuel - that's about it. You could spend a lot of money, but the returns will be small, and the reliability rapidly compromised. There is no simple bolt on solution that will give any meaningful power boost - the OMC 9.9/15 series are a classic case. While the basic engine is the same, bore and stroke, head, lower leg and so on, the carby and back plate(s), ignition, exhaust tube and several other parts and linkages are subtly different. The extra power only becomes apparent due to the engine revving out an additional 1000 rpm or so, and the 15 is not as reliable at idling for long periods due to the larger inlet nor does it make any noticeable extra power until the very top end. I have owned both, and loved both equally. The 15 barely improved outright top end speed by a few knots, much less than the apparent 50% increase in power suggests. The 9.9 is considered virtually unburstable, as the engine is built to rev higher and thus you can sit at WOT all day with the little engine happy as the proverbial. Plus it will idle around while trolling with little drama for an hour or two, the 15 tends to choke up fairly early and requires a good fang on a regular basis to clear it's oiled up throat - the 15 is known to carbon up the exhaust tube more than the 9.9, but the modern lubricants have pretty much reduced that to nil. Pennzoil makes a very good 2 strokes outboard oil, you can find it at any Auto Parts store. Premium gas is to be use only in turbo charged engines, not for small two cycles engines. As long as your engine is running at its finest, there nothing you can do to it to improve performance. I recommend you to try a propeller with a higher pitch to gain top speed, but keep on mind that every one inch you increase your propeller pitch you will also increase150-200 engine RPM's, resulting in engine damage or overheating if you pass the manufacturer RPM limit for that engine. Once you've repaired the vehicle, the error codes must be cleared, which can be done by disconnecting the battery to reset the vehicle's computer. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Adjustable wrench Step by Step : 1 Turn ignition to the off position. 2 Open the hood and locate the truck's battery. Subaru . How to Adjust the Ignition Timing in a Ford Mustang 5.0The timing on a Ford Mustang 5.0 is computer controlled. The timing starts with the hall-effect sensor in the distributor, where the signal is picked up relative to the position of top dead center on the number 1 cylinder. The distributor contains both a vacuum advance and a mechanical advance. The vacuum advance allows for easier starts by allowing the timing to regress to a retarded state just for starting. As soon as the engine starts and a vacuum is produced, it advances the spark for the correct idle. The manual advance increases the advance above 2,000 rpm. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Distributor wrench Inductive timing light Step by Step : 1 Connect the timing light to the battery by placing the red lead to the positive terminal and the black lead to the negative terminal. Make sure the wires are free of all moving or hot parts. Connect the inductive carbon pickup around the number 1 spark plug wire. This is the closest wire to the radiator on the passenger's side of the engine in a Mustang. 2 Disconnect the spout connector, which is a white, plastic, square-looking in-line plug that is close to the ignition module. This will take the computer out of the line and allow the timing to drop to its lowest uncontrolled limit (base timing). Disconnect the vacuum hose from the distributor and plug it with a screw. Start the engine and allow it to warm up. 3 Shine the timing light on the timing plate, which is located on the timing chain cover. The timing plate has a V groove in the center of the plate, which is top dead center (0 degrees). The advance numbers are from the 0 mark upwards, toward the water pump (before top dead center). The lower numbers running down toward the oil pan are degrees of retard. 4 Check the numbers on the timing plate. They should indicate that the timing is 14 degrees below top dead center (BTDC) on the timing plate. If the numbers are off, the distributor needs to be adjusted. 5 Shut the engine down. Loosen the distributor with the distributor wrench just enough so that the distributor can be rotated. Start the engine and shine the timing light at the timing plate. Rotate the distributor clockwise to advance the spark timing, and counter-clockwise to retard it. Set the timing on 14 degrees BTDC by rotating the distributor, then tighten the distributor. 6 Reinsert the spout into its respective receptacle. Connect the vacuum line to the distributor.
